Inspect the face, glazing and frame first
Before wrapping anything, note existing scratches, loose fittings, cracked glazing, delicate finishes and protruding ornament. The packaging should avoid placing pressure on vulnerable areas.
Protect the surface before adding cushioning
Cushioning should not rub directly against a sensitive painted, printed or finished surface. A suitable protective layer helps prevent abrasion while the outer layers handle shock and movement.
Corners and edges deserve their own protection
Frames are often damaged at the corners because those points receive concentrated impact. Corner protection and a properly sized carton help prevent the frame from becoming the shock absorber.
Stop movement inside the box
The piece should not slide, rotate or repeatedly strike the same carton wall. Empty space must be managed with the right cushioning system rather than simply filled with loose material.
Know when parcel packing is not enough
Museum-grade pieces, very large works, climate-sensitive art or objects that require fabricated wood crating may need a specialist art logistics provider. A responsible packing service should identify that before accepting the job.
Prepare the information before bringing art in
Measure the outside of the frame, including projecting details. Identify glass, acrylic or an exposed surface, and mention loose fittings or existing damage. For several pieces, provide a count and rough dimensions for each before arranging the project.
